Biblical Exercises of Spiritual Senses

God is Spirit (John 4:24), who created us in His image (Gen. 1:27). So we are a Spirit being with a Soul living in a physical Body (see Rebirth of the Spirit)! God has ordained us to live in two worlds – the spiritual and the physical. Our inner spirit man has spiritual senses just like our physical body has five senses. Our spiritual senses enable us to see, hear, smell, taste and touch things in the spiritual world.

Our inner spirit man connects with God and is the “real us” who grows by “eating” the spiritual food - the Words of God (1 Pet. 2:2). Unlike other books, the Bible is Spirit and Life, as Jesus said: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” (John 6:63). When we read and meditate on the words of God, we eat the spiritual food and our inner spirit man breathes the Life of the living God and grows. The Lord Jesus said:

Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. (John. 6:53-57)

Here, the ‘flesh and blood’ of the Lord refers to the spiritual food for our spirit man (Matt. 4:4; Jer. 15:16), just as taking the Lord’s Supper (Matt. 26:26-29). People who eat and drink material food for the flesh will still die, because life is in the Spirit (John 6:63). The Lord Jesus is the “Word made flesh” (John 1:14; 1 Pet. 1:23; 1 John 5:7), and He is the spiritual food for life that has come down from heaven. By “eating” the Lord’s true Bread of Life, we receive His eternal life and make it our own (John 6:51). That is why the Bible says, “As He is, so are we in this world.(1 John 4:17). The Lord Jesus is light (1 John 1:5), so we are also light, able to walk in the supernatural spiritual realm like the Lord! (See also: Supernatural Walk with the Lord)

The biblical exercises of the spiritual senses involve faith and imagination, both of which are spiritual organs. They are the gateway to our connection and entrance into the spiritual realm. We will exercise our spiritual senses by “eating” the words of God. Through our sanctified imagination, we consciously exercise our spiritual senses to internalise and assimilate the supernatural events recorded in the Bible, so that our spiritual senses are developed and sharpened as our spirit man grows in stature, until Christ is formed in us (Gal. 4:19; Eph. 4:13), “For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” (Heb. 5:13-14)

Biblical Method of Exercising Spiritual Senses

Exercise Method

Faith + Imagination

The spiritual senses of our inner spirit man enable us to see, hear, smell, taste and touch various things in the spiritual world.

(Note: It is best to start with the Seven-step Biblical Spiritual Exercises for supernatural walk)

Use "faith" and "sanctified imagination" to visualise the scenes of the biblical events, create all the scenes in your imagination, and imagine yourself as a major character in them, literally being there, to "see/hear/smell/taste/touch" the people, weather, sights, sounds, tastes and smells, etc., of the scenes.

Seeing the Lord Jesus, observing His demeanors and His works (Hab. 2:1; Ps. 25:15), and look at the surroundings in the scene;
Hearing the words Jesus spoke and the voice of His words (Luke 1:45; Ps. 119:103), as well as other sounds in the scene;
Smelling the fragrance of Christ emanating from Jesus (2 Cor. 2:15), and smell the fragrance of flowers and plants in the scene;
Tasting the flavour of the Lord's grace (Ps 34:8) and the food in the scene, such as the bread and fish distributed by the Lord in the scene of the five loaves and two fishes;
Touching  the Lord's garment, just like the desperate woman in the Bible (Matt. 9:20-22), or imagine the Lord lovingly touching your head and feeling His love and healing power (Matt. 14:36).

Record your spiritual observations and revelations, including your feelings and spiritual experiences after seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, or touching. Repeat each scene, feeling all the emotions and atmosphere again, and truly "immerse“ yourself in the situation.

Steps for Exercising Spiritual Senses:

1 Sit or lie comfortably in a quiet prayer place where you will not be disturbed. Begin with a period of quiet prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit to sanctify your imagination and lead you into the spiritual realm.

2 Select a Bible story, or use the following biblical supernatural events, and read through the whole passage. Then read it again slowly, and after reading, stop and meditate for a while on the scene of the events described.

3 Read the whole passage again. Then close your eyes after each verse, and visualise the description in your imagination and "see" the "images" that each verse inspires.

4 Read the passage again, and visualise the whole scene of events again.

5 Shift your consciousness to focus on your inner spirit man. In your imagination, you are in the Bible story, consciously sensing the various sensations received by your spiritual senses. Try to use your imagination to literally “see/hear/smell/taste/touch” the people, the environment, the sights, sounds, tastes and smells, etc. in this scene.

Repeat the same scene several times, each time for 1 hour.

The Prophet Isaiah "Saw" Jesus' Crucifixion and Resurrection more than 700 years before the Birth of the Lord
(Isaiah 53:4-12)

4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. 9 And they made His grave with the wicked. But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. 11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.

Five Loaves and Two Fishes Supernatural Provision of the Lord Jesus
(John 6:1-14)

1 After these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were diseased. And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples. Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do. Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.” One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?” 10 Then Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand11 And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.” 13 Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

The Word of God is Spirit and Life Jesus is the Bread of Life
(John 6:47-63)

47 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world. 52 The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread which came down from heaven—not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.” 59 These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum. 60 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?” 61 When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

Jesus Walks on the Sea
(Matthew 14:22-36)

22 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. 23 And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. 24 But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. 25 Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” 28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.29 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” 31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.” 34 When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick, 36 and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well.

Jesus Walks on the Sea
(John 6:16-21)

16 Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 18 Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. 19 So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid. 20 But He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

Philip’s Translocation after Baptising Ethiopian Eunuch
(Acts 8:26-40)

26 Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is desert. 27 So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, 28 was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. 29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and overtake this chariot.30 So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 The place in the Scripture which he read was this: “He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; And as a lamb before its shearer is silent, So He opened not His mouth. 33 In His humiliation His justice was taken away, And who will declare His generation? For His life is taken from the earth.” 34 So the eunuch answered Philip and said, “I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” 37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing through, he preached in all the cities till he came to Caesarea.

Apostle John Translated in Spirit to Receive Revelation
(Revelation1:9-20)

9 I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, 11 saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and, “What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.” 12 Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. 14 His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; 15 His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; 16 He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. 17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. 18 I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death. 19 Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this. 20 The mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches.

Apostle John Translated in Spirit to Receive Revelation (2)
(Revelation 19:1-4,11-16,19-21)

1 After these things I heard a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, “Alleluia! Salvation and glory and honor and power belong to the Lord our God! 2 For true and righteous are His judgments, because He has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication; and He has avenged on her the blood of His servants shed by her.” 3 Again they said, “Alleluia! Her smoke rises up forever and ever!” 4 And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who sat on the throne, saying, “Amen! Alleluia!”... 11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. ... 19 And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. 20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. 21 And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh.
